On May 12th, a car approached a brown bear on a national highway in Shari Town, resulting in the bear damaging the rear bumper of the vehicle. If you encounter a brown bear while driving, do not approach it and wait for the bear to leave, or avoid it and pass by quickly.

Due to a bear attack on Mt. Rausu in August 2025, the hiking trails in Shiretoko are currently closed.

The trails are scheduled to reopen on July 5, 2026.
